How to Find God

The most important thing when you attempt to seek God in your life is that you must be sincere. God often hides himself from casual seekers, but for the person who is honest, sincere and ready to do business with God, he is always ready to reveal Himself.

Many people who embark upon a spiritual search do not understand the problem that sin plays in alienating us from a real relationship with God. Often people are deluded by thinking that they a 'good people' or 'righteous' enough to be accepted by God. Others may think that God could never possibly forgive them for all of the bad things that they have done. But the reality is that all of us have broken God's holy commandments and actually deserve God's publishment. Anger, hatred, jealousy, lust... all of these attitudes alone are enough to condemn us to everlasting separation from God. Our only avenue of appeal is to come to God with sincere humility and repentance and to ask for His forgiveness. This attitude of 'poverty of spirit' is the first real step towards God. If anyone things that they have no sin, they are deluded and have stumbled in their quest to find God before they even begin.

The good news is that God loves you more than you know. When Jesus Christ came into the world he was on a rescue mission. Jesus showed us, by his life, his words and his actions what the character and nature of God is like. Then Jesus dealt with the sin problem once and for all by dying on the cross and taking the punishment that was due to us upon Himself. By dying on the cross Jesus opened the way for us all to have a free and open relationship with God.

Do you believe in Jesus?
Christians believe that he is more than just a good man or a prophet, but that he is alive today and actively involved in world affairs. Jesus himself claimed to be God’s son and the saviour of the world. You’ll need to read the accounts of his life in the Bible to make up your own mind if these claims are true because the very first step to finding God is to believe that Jesus Christ really is who he claimed to be.

To receive God's wonderful gift of a new life, you need only to repent of the life that you have been living, believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and submit to Him as Lord (boss) of your life and follow him forever. Becoming a follower of Jesus is a big step. When Jesus comes into your life he will want to make changes, and for some this might be very costly. But as Jesus said, "What does it profit a person if he gains the whole world, but loses his soul?"

Ask God to forgive you and to fill you with the Holy Spirit. According to the Bible, you should then be baptised as a way of saying ‘God, I need to be washed, please make me clean in your sight’. When the Holy Spirit comes into your life you’ll have a clear assurance that you are God’s child and that your sins are completely forgiven.

Why the Bible is Important
The Bible contains many accounts of God’s dealings with His people throughout history, and consists of two parts: The Old Testament, which contains the story of creation and God’s dealings with his people and the Jewish nation. This spans hundreds of years and also includes prophecies foretelling the coming of Jesus.

The New Testament gives four separate accounts of the life and ministry of Jesus. Matthew, Mark, Luke & John are eye-witness accounts of Jesus’ teaching and miracles, including his death and resurrection. For people wanting to know what all this is about, these four books are the best places to start.

The fifth book of the New Testament, the books of Acts, records what happened when Jesus’ disciples were filled with the power of the Holy Spirit and then went out to do what Jesus had called them to do. The remaining books of the New Testament were letters written by the apostles to the various churches to teach believers how to live as followers of Jesus and how to overcome particular problems.

The last book of the Bible, the book of Revelation, is a prophetic book containing a message given to the apostle John by Jesus. This tells us about what will happen in the future.

By reading God's word, the Bible, you will get to know God more and be strengthened spiritually.  Your new-life adventure begins...
